Nurse Consultants

The Department of Gastroenterology at St. Vincent’s Hospital provides a comprehensive range of consultative and diagnostic procedures in gastroenterology. It has a particular interest in chronic viral hepatitis and other liver diseases, inflammatory bowel disease, therapeutic endoscopy, oesophageal disorders and functional gut disorders.

Hepatitis Nurse Consultants

Hepatitis nurse consultants co-ordinate care for our patients with liver disease and cirrhosis:

  • ensure that patients who are viral hepatitis treatment candidates or have advanced liver disease are reviewed in a timely manner
  • provide support to patients undergoing treatment for Hepatitis.
  • provide individual education and advice to GPs about hepatitis and the appropriate management
  • support GPs to participate in the hepatitis shared care program
  • co-ordinate GP requests for consultation for prescription of HCV therapy
  • coordinate care and support patients with cirrhosis and complications of cirrhosis

Inflammatory Bowel Disease Nurse Consultants

IBD nurse consultants co-ordinate care for our patients with Inflammatory Bowel Disease, including patients being treated with immunosuppressive and biological agents:

  • assess patient’s suitability for biological treatment for IBD in compliance with the Medicare guidelines and to ensure patients receive such appropriate drug treatments
  • educate patients adequately regarding biologic therapy for IBD (particularly self-managed)
  • monitor patients throughout their course of therapy in consultation with the treating gastroenterologist
  • coordinate other aspects of care for patients with IBD, including infusions, management of minor flares

Liver Cancer Nurse Consultant

The Liver Cancer Nurse co-ordinates care for our patients with hepatocellular carcinoma:

  • coordinates referrals to the weekly HCC multidisciplinary meeting, including obtaining access to external imaging and distributing correspondence from the weekly meetings
  • provides support to patients undergoing treatment for HCC
  • coordinates referrals for HCC imaging and treatment
  • educates patients about HCC treatments and monitors patients throughout their course of therapy in consultation with the treating gastroenterologist

Victorian Hepatitis Educator

Our Victorian Hepatitis Educator provides statewide Hepatitis B and hepatitis C education in your workplace. Interactive and evidence based workforce development can be provided in your workplace. Our service can be tailored to suit your learning needs.  This service is suitable for a range of health professionals throughout Victoria including primary care, nurses, refugee health, midwives, GPs, allied health, health students, aged care, Aboriginal health workers, mental health, community health, dentists, pharmacists, Needle & Syringe Program and AOD workers.

Statewide Hepatitis Prison Service

The Statewide Hepatitis Prison service is a nurse led program within each of the main prisons, and provides BBV screening program and complex care coordination of patients with liver diseases within the prison service. To find out more about this program, click here.

Integrated Hepatitis Nurse

Victorian Integrated Hepatitis C Services are a state-wide network nurse-led service, working within existing health systems across Melbourne to reduce stigma and discrimination, enhance prevention efforts and increase testing and treatment for hepatitis B and C infection. Particular areas of focus include persons who inject drugs, opiate substitution therapy programs, mental health clinics and addiction medicine units.

Functional Gut Nurse Consultant

The functional gut nurse consultant co-ordinates care for our complex patients with functional gut disorders seen through our Gastroenterology psychological medicine clinic for functional GI disorders Clinic:

  • coordinates and triages referrals to the Gastroenterology psychological medicine clinic for functional GI disorders clinic, particularly coordinating referrals for multidisciplinary review within the clinic
  • provides pelvic physiotherapy assessment
  • provides support to patients seen in the Gastroenterology psychological medicine clinic for functional GI disorders

Total Parental Nutrition Nurse Consultant

The TPN nurse provide consultant services together with our clinical nutrition consultant, and manages and coordinates care for inpatients and outpatients requiring TPN or home hydration.
