Our Research

The Colorectal Department has mentored a range of students, residents, registrars and fellows undertaking research in Colorectal Surgery over the last 40 years resulting in numerous publications. At present Basil D’Souza is supervisor of research at St Vincent’s and projects underway include stem cells for fistula, peri-anal Crohn’s disease, injectables for faecal incontinence.

    Research Team

    The Department participates in a large number of multi-national clinical trials, ranging from early phase 1 studies of new medications to large phase 3 studies, for new exciting treatments and interventions for the management of chronic viral hepatitis, including hepatitis C and hepatitis B, immune related liver diseases, hepatocellular carcinoma, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease and advanced endoscopy. In addition, we have a large number of investigator initiated research projects in each field.
