Advanced Training in Gastroenterology

The Department of Gastroenterology offers three RACP-accredited advanced training positions: one 1st core training position and two 2nd core training positions. These positions provide extensive clinical and research opportunities in a highly supportive and dynamic environment.

Our trainees engage in a wide range of supervised clinical activities, including:

  • Managing a busy inpatient unit across all gastroenterology disciplines
  • Providing a consultation service for referrals from other hospital units
  • Overseeing outpatient management across various specialist clinics, including liver
    disease, inflammatory bowel disease, functional gut disorders, and clinical nutrition at
    St. Vincent’s Hospital
  • Gaining general endoscopy training with CONJOINT-accredited gastroenterologists
  • Managing clinical nutrition and TPN referrals
  • Receiving training in manometry and interpretation of findings

Our program provides robust educational and research experiences, including:

    • A formal teaching program that covers all major gastroenterology disciplines
    • Participation in unit meetings, such as multidisciplinary and complex case
      conference meetings
    • Journal club presentations and discussions at the gastrointestinal combined case
      conference
    • Involvement in audits and attendance at grand rounds

In addition to clinical duties, all accredited trainees participate in a research project with opportunities to engage in clinical trials and other research initiatives.

The Department of Gastroenterology actively focuses on clinical and translational research that advances our understanding of disease biology and directly improves patient care. We consistently demonstrate success in our research programs, with a strong track record of high- impact publications, successful competitive grant funding, and numerous higher degree students completing their research.

Our research gastroenterology fellows engage in both research and clinical activities within the department, gaining comprehensive experience in their field.

Opportunities include:

    • Participating in unit meetings, including multidisciplinary and complex case

    • Presenting at journal clubs and the gastrointestinal combined case conference
    • Involvement in audits and attendance at grand rounds
    • Attending outpatient specialist clinics in their field of interest
    • Continuing to receive endoscopy training and exposure
