National Symposia Hosted by the Department of Gastroenterology

The Department of Gastroenterology regularly hosts national symposia covering key areas, including hepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), functional gut disorders, and endoscopy. These annual or biannual meetings bring together leading experts from Victoria and beyond, with invited national and international keynote speakers.

What to expect

Each symposium features:

  • Keynote lectures from prominent figures in the field
  • Case-based interactive panel discussions
  • Breakout sessions designed for in-depth exploration of key topics
  • For the endoscopy symposium, live demonstrations of advanced techniques
  • The lively panel discussions cover topical and complex care issues, with representation from a wide range of healthcare disciplines, as well as community and consumer sectors.

Our National Hepatitis Symposium is a long-standing event that addresses critical topics in viral hepatitis C, hepatitis B, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma, and portal hypertension.

While we currently don’t have an upcoming date for the next symposium, please check back for updates as we continue to plan future events.

The National IBD Symposium is held every two years, with the last event taking place in 2024. It focuses on advances in the management of inflammatory bowel disease, including the latest clinical and research insights. Planning is underway for the next symposium, with more details to come.

The Department of Gastroenterology actively focuses on clinical and translational research that advances our understanding of disease biology and directly improves patient care. We consistently demonstrate success in our research programs, with a strong track record of high- impact publications, successful competitive grant funding, and numerous higher degree students completing their research.

All gastroenterology fellowship positions within the department are dedicated to higher degree research. If you’re interested in pursuing a fellowship, please reach out to the relevant research team for more information.

This symposium brings attention to the emerging field of functional gut disorders. Future events are currently under planning, and more information will be shared soon.

Our Advanced Endoscopy Symposium highlights the principles and challenges in the endoscopic management of gastrointestinal conditions. Stay tuned for updates on our next symposium.
