Simon Banting completed his medical training at the University of Melbourne with an MB BS (Hons) in 1981. He then undertook General Surgical Training at St Vincent’s Hospital in Melbourne. He achieved his FRACS in 1990. This was followed by an 18 month Fellowship in HPB surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital.

In 1991, he then went to Scotland, where he trained in Laparoscopic Surgery under the tutelage of Professor Alf Cuschieri. This was followed by training in HPB surgery and Liver Transplantation at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, under the Supervision of Professor David Carter and James Garden.

On return to Melbourne in 1993, he joined the HPB unit at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. He also commenced a 10 year period working in the liver transplant program at the Austin Hospital. He was appointed to the HPB/ UGI surgical unit at Box Hill Hospital in Eastern Health, and was soon appointed as a VMO surgeon to the Peter McCallum Cancer Centre.

In 2006, he was appointed as an examiner to the General Surgical Court of Examiners of the RACS.

Since 2011, he has been the Director of the HPB/ UGI surgical service at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne. He was appointed as the Head of Surgery at St Vincent’s Hospital, Melbourne in February 2017.

During the last 25 years, he has worked in Public and Private spheres in HPB and UGI surgery, and has extensive experience in ERCP. He has been a VMO at the CGHS during that time, and more recently he was appointed to LRH, where he performs ERCP and gastroscopy, and provides a consultant service.
